January 2002 Issue - Gibson Gazette Shows Off An Original Flying V and Sunburst Les Paul

By Larry Meiners

Checking out at an old Gibson Gazette provides a fascinating glimpse of the guitar world of yesteryear. Gibson's newsletter is long out of print but we have the pleasure of viewing great pictures of what now are considered classic vintage guitars and wishing we had a time machine to go back in time and snag a few. Gibson used the Gazette to promote their instruments, featured artists and the music stores around the USA that stocked their products.

A Montgomery, Alabama music store is shown below. The picture was taken in late 1960. At left is a Sunburst Les Paul model next to a TV Les Paul Jr. and in the window at right is a Korina Flying V. This original Flying V was probably made in 1958 or 1959 and had been sitting in that window for at least a year! How cool is that? I wonder where those guitars are now? When was the last time a guitar salesman wore a tie?

What a great group of guitar students we have pictured below. Many Les Paul Special models in Cherry are held proudly, several Gibson amps are shown and a mighty Sunburst Les Paul is at bottom left in the photo. Wouldn't you like to have taken lessons on a burst!
